Photography Break Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Over spring break I traveled to West Texas with my family. In my continued effort to intersperse my heavier posts with lighter material, here are some of the pictures I brought back.
We started off at the McDonald Observatory.
A grass fire started later that afternoon.
Though it certainly was beautiful as night fell…
The fire was still ablaze well into the night and a house had to be evacuated.
The following day we went to Big Bend National Park.
Where there were still some yuccas just ending their blooming season.
If you are a birdwatcher (which I am not), I am sure the park is something like paradise.
The following day my dad and I went camping up in the Chisos.
I of course took plenty of pictures of the area…
…especially as the sun was setting…
…and day turned into dusk.
So that was some of the west Texas adventure. I’m picking up some prints this afternoon and will be finishing off my portfolio so I can take it around and hopefully get my work displayed somewhere local. It would be nice to be able to make a little bit of money from this hobby.

I also have grown to appreciate the beauty of West Texas. I drove through twice in the last 2 months due to moving across the country twice. The plants and animals are completely different from the ones around DC, Seattle, or Florida where I have lived.
Last week I saw many century plants in bloom. Somehow the knowlege that the blooms are rare added to the appreciation of their beauty. The environment is so rugged and dry, it amazes me that anything can live there. Somehow that idea also makes all those hardy plants and animals even more beautiful to me.
